my new house

Today i built my first architectural model at my new part time job. I will be working for an architect here in Austin on an as needed basis, primarily building models, hopefully one or two days a week. There was something immensely satisfying about making something go from a two-dimensional printout on a sheet of paper, to an actual, scale, three-dimensional object. What is particularly fascinating is the way that this small model allowed me to actually enter the space of the residence, move between its walls, and really get a strong sense of the what the actual space will be like when built. I suppose that is a given, and the intention of models, but it is still a fantastic experience to have none-the-less. This model was rather small, but it seemingly does not take much to impart a sense of the three-dimensional.
The model, regardless of the scale, has this ability to latch onto our sense of fantasy. As we imagine our miniature selves walking down hallways, staring out of windows, and entering doorways, there is a wonderful overlap between our physical reality and psychic projection. They rely on our experiences in the built environment, and our ability to project and fantasize into it, in order to function. This is perhaps not dissimilar to the way that maps and other diagrams of our spaces function. Individual degrees of spatial knowledge and spatial ability come to mind here, as they are key in navigating our environment. Aside from being both enjoyable, and an invaluable experience, this job should have an interesting effect on my own work.
